 Delicate Goryeo Dynasty

Hello, my name is Chae and I will tell you informations about the Goryeo Dynasty's delicate art, pottery skills, and writings. For more details, I will tell you about printing skills, Tripitaka Koreana, Sangnam, and the White porcelain with rope design.

First, the printing skills of Korea were great at that time. Korea had the world's most oldest wood printing skills, the woodblock document, the oldest metal block document, and the oldest metal printing book exsisting in the world. The oldest woodblock document is the 'Mugujeonggwangdaedaranigyeong'(무구정광대다라니경) that was printed in the 8th century of times. The oldest metal printing document was the' Sangjeonggogeumyemun'(상정고금예문) which was amazing because it was printed 200 years earlier than the Gutenberg Bible. The 'Jikjisimcheyojeol' (직지심체요절), the oldest metal printing book exsisting was made in the 1377s and is now in the France National Library. By these writings, we can know that our printing skills were in very high levels.

Secondly, I will tell you about the Tripitaka Koreana. The woodblock printing in Korea was superior than other countries as I mentioned before. Asia's most comprehensive collection of Buddist Canons are now in the Haeinsa Temple. This is called the Tripitaka Koreana. These were carved in over 80,000 wooden blocks without a single error. This shows that they had a lot of effort in the Tripitaka Koreana. When the Mongols invaded Goryeo a long time ago,  the Goryeo government had to move the capital to Gwangha island and had to have a fight with them. People wanted Budda to save their country desperately, so they took long16 years to make the Tripitaka Koreana. Peopel are amazed that the Tripitaka Koreana was in excellent condition. By a lot of good facts about Tripitaka Koreana, it was chosen as the Memory of the World by UNESCO in the 2007s.

Thrid, I will tell you about Sangnam which was one of the skills that was used for pottery. Sangnma is one of the most unique techniques that was done by putting patterns in the celadon. In the mid-12th century, Korean potters wantedto develeop their unique clay method. The inlaying technique was widely used for bornze and other works usually. However, the Goryeo celadon artists were the very first ones to do the inlaying technique to procelains. The following is the steps for the Sangnam technique.

1. Carve the patterns to the piece then fill it with white or red clay.

2. The clay in the patterns will change the color if the piece is baked and glazed. Then, bake it for the second time.

3. As the iron clay will be combined with oxygen, the white clay turns whiter, and the red clay will turn black. The red color is made out of copper in the inlaid clay.

I think that their ideas are what really make the Sangnam special and  a unique technique.

Lastly, I will tell you about the white procelain with the rope design pottery. It was made inthe early Joseun period. The rope pattern is made by the iron brown glaze. This pottery has a lot of blank space and a simple design. The rope design is what gives a strong impression. At the bottom of this pottery, some of the Korean Characters are written. It was quite hard to understand. However, we can know that it was made after the Hanguel was made. I personally like this pottery the most, because it has a simpel design unliek other potteries. However, it shows it specialty and beauty.

In conclusion, I think that Goryeo culture is very delicate and had a lot fo effort to it, so I think that it iwll be great if people from other countries have a curiosity about Goryeo's arts and let peopel know Korea a lot better than before.

Thank you for reading my essay.
