In Joseon Dynasty, most palaces were mmade of wood. It was easy to burn. So they put water inside a pot called 드므. 드므 is not for turning of the fire. In that time, people believed that the fire spirit or evil spirit would run away if it saw its reflation in the water. Also it was once believed that frogs would cry out if a fire broke out. So, sometimes frogs were kept in the deumeu to serve as a natural fire alarm. This was rooted more in folk belief than practical use.
