feng shui(風水)
the Chinese art or practice of creating harmonious surroundings that enhance the balance of yin and yang, as in arranging furniture or determining the siting of a house.
풍수란, 중국에서의 조화로운 환경을 만드는 기술 또는 풍습으로서, 음양의 균형을 향상시킴으로써 이를 실현한다는 것이다. 예를 들면, 가구를 정돈하거나 주택 건설에 쓰일 토지를 정하는 등의 사례에서와 같다.
yin and yang(陰陽)
(in Chinese philosophy and religion) two principles, one negative, dark, and feminine (yin) and one positive, bright, and masculine (yang) whose interaction influences the destinies of creatures and things.
음양이란, (중국인의 철학과 신앙으로서의) 두 원리인데, 하나는 ‘부정적’·‘어두운’·‘여성의’[陰]라는 의미가 있고, 다른 하나는 ‘긍정적’·‘밝은’·‘남성의’[陽]라는 의미가 담긴 것으로서, 그 두 원리의 상호작용이 피조물과 사물의 운명에 영향을 준다는 것이다.
